Frequently Asked Questions

Being the subject of criminal charges can be stressful and time consuming. At Muia Criminal Law, we are dedicated to providing competent legal advice and support to our clients. Below you can find answers to some basic questions, we encourage you to contact us and book a free consultation to receive specific answers regarding your case.

    • Please bring all the documents that you were provided by the police and the Crown Attorney (you can also email us a copy of your paperwork).

    • If there are other relevant documents, keep them handy, we will need to review them as the case progresses. It is critically important that you maintain documentary evidence, including such things as text messages.

    • We also encourage our clients to immediately write down a detailed chronological version of the events in question for them to retain their memory. This chronology should include the names and contact information of any potential witnesses.

    • Should you choose to prepare such a document write “PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL - FOR MY LAWYER’, this ensures that the documents will only be used by your lawyer in aid of your defence.

  • Every case is different, the cost of your legal defence will depend on a number of factors such as the complexity of your case, the amount of Crown disclosure, whether you decide to resolve or proceed to trial, the estimated length of trial, whether you elect a trial by judge alone or by jury, and many other factors.

During our first meeting, we will review your anticipated legal fees with you.

Muia Criminal Law primarily charges a block fee vs an hourly retainer. A block fee provides a degree of certainty with respect to how much your case will cost. We want our clients to feel comfortable talking to us in detail about their matters, by providing a block fee, clients do not need to worry about incurring excessive fees in order to consult with their lawyer.

We offer flexible payment plans to ensure that you can receive a high-quality defence without high financial burden.

Muia Criminal Law accepts Legal Aid Certificates.

  • Depending on the scope of your retainer you can typically expect the following from the lawyer handling your case:

    • Attend court appearances on your behalf

    • Obtain, review and order outstanding disclosure

    • Conduct meetings with you to review your disclosure and advise of your options to move your matter forward

    • Have meetings with the Crown Attorney and Judge (if directed)

    • Proceed to a guilty plea or trial

    • Conduct legal research and analysis to provide you with an opinion of your success at trial and/or a resolution

    • Maintain an open line of communication so you are aware of the status of your matter
